Daniel Heery
Project Manager
Cybermoor Ltd
Daniel is the Project Manager for Cybermoor in Alston. Educated at Newcastle University, Daniel has worked SMEs, voluntary and public sector organisations encouraging them to use ICT innovatively. Daniel began work on rural development with the EU’s LEADER+ Programme in County Durham and this raised his awareness of rural issues and the roles which ICT could play in transforming rural economies. He then worked at Voluntary Action Cumbria supporting community ICT centres in schools and developed the Cybermoor project in 2001. This was a £1.5M project to deliver free PCs, a web portal and broadband to the community of Alston Moor in Cumbria, promoting social inclusion and economic regeneration. The project provided broadband to the whole community using wireless technology in 2002, reaching remote farmhouses and hamlets. The award winning Cybermoor website www.cybermoor.org is the focal point for the Alston community to share news and information on-line.
Now a successful co-op where each of the 370 broadband customers is a shareholder, Cybermoor has carried out work for clients in the public sector including Northumberland Strategic Partnership, Connected Cumbria Partnership and One North East. Current activities include consultancy work for the European Commission on Rural Broadband issues and filling north east “notspots” (remote areas unable to access ADSL broadband) with support from ONE North East.
Daniel is also passionate about accessibility issues – making hardware and software easier to use for people with disabilities. Cybermoor provides support to voluntary sector organisations across the North East on accessibility issues.
